» Trixie Whitley

Born in Ghent- Belgium in '87, in a family of artists, musicians and poets. She moved with her parents to New York when she was a year old. Since the tender age of 3 she grew up spending time in recording studio's in NYC (Electric Lady Land etc..) and in New Orleans (with Daniel Lanois) with her father Chris Whitley. After she moved back to Belgium with her mother she started playing drums at age 11. Shortly after she started touring intensively around Europe between the age of 12-15 with several music theatre companies where she had opportunities to perform as an actress, playing the drums, bass and singing.

Around the same time she started DJ'ing and had oportunities to spin at the SMAK museum and the ESKIMO parties in Belgium aswell as in Amsterdam, New York, Brussels and in the main tent of the DOUR festival. At age 14 she started dancing and touring professionaly for the contemporary dance company "Les Ballets C de la B". Shortly after she quit school, and at 17 she moved on her own back to New York. While surviving as a waitress and living in Brooklyn and Queens for nearly 2 years she started teaching herself the piano and focussed mainly on her own songwriting. During that time she did contribute to other projects as well. She's been in spain for recordings,did backing vocals for the new Chocolate Genius album with producer Craig Street (Norah Jones,Casandra Wilson,...)

Lead and backup vocals for Jerboa & Krewcial and backing vocals for her father, Chris Whitley's last album "Soft dangerous shores". In the meantime she performed numerous times with her own solo project in NYC venues. After the passing of her father in 2005,she went back to Belgium for while. She continued writing and playing all over the country. Now in 2008 she is living back in Brooklyn ,NY and performing in the States either with her own band, with Meshell Ndegeocello or just solo. She is recording her debut album, produced by Dougie Bowne (the Lounge Lizards, Iggy Pop, Marc Ribot,John Zorn,...) . An EP is due to be released in the summer of '08 Stay Tuned!

Als jullie deze jongedame aan het werk willen zien, ben je er beter vlug bij, want voor we het weten vertrekt ze misschien voorgoed terug naar New York. Trixie is de Belgisch-Amerikaanse dochter van de overleden bluespoëet Chris Whitley en ze is minstens even bevlogen van muziek. Een heel bescheiden meisje met een natuurlijke charme, een keiharde ambitie en een stem en muziek die je raakt.

Mijn familie bestaat uit artiesten en muzikanten. Mijn oom speelt bij dEUS, mijn grootvader was een jazz-contrabassist. Vanaf dat ik in New York was en mijn pa een platencontract had, heb ik niets anders meer gekend dan studio’s en tournees. Ik was drie toen ik de eerste keer zelf op het podium stond.

In een arena in Berlijn, en papa moest daar spelen voor drieduizend mensen. Ik ben toen bij hem gaan staan op het podium en heb het hele optreden aan zijn been gehangen en me verstopt omdat ik bang was. Mij leken het wel twintigduizend mensen, zo massaal, ik was superverlegen! En toch had ik vanaf toen de smaak te pakken, maar het is pas tegen mijn vijftiende dat ik echt met mijn eigen ding ben begonnen.

Ik ben begonnen met drummen, en dat combineerde ik met nummers die ik zelf schreef, maar dat werd wat minder toen ik een aantal jaren professioneel heb gedanst. Ik was toen ook al nummers aan het schrijven, maar het heeft zijn tijd geduurd eer ik daar mijn draai in vond. Tegelijk was het ook uit noodzaak; ik moest iets op papier zetten! Ik heb toen ik klein was dagen in studio's als Electric Ladyland zitten te koekeloeren. Drums zijn mijn instrument. Ik heb één jaar muziekschool contrabas gevolgd toen ik tien was, en ze hebben me daar gewoon uitgelachen omdat ik zo klein was met zo’n groot instrument. Dus: fuck it!Music schools konden mijn kloten kussen, ik ging drummen.
